Every year for either Thanksgiving or Christmas, we travel from Kansas to Texas to visit family. This year was extra special because we invited our friends Sha Sha and Jinbo to go with us. Because four people and two big dogs would not fit in any of our cars, we rented an SUV. Maya and Pierson rode comfortably and safely in the back cargo area. They got to wear their dog seat belts. But because the Ford did not have cargo rings, I had to use two connecting tethers and reach around to the seat belts in the back seats so that they could be hooked in. Connecting the seat belt tethers to the seat belts did not interfere with our ability to use the seat belts. Here are some pictures from our trip. And check out our other blog, http://americandogblog.wordpress.com/, for the rest of the pictures.
There are more Wordless Wednesday photos from our trip to Texas for Thanksgiving. Be sure to stop by our other blog!
I meant to have more pictures posted form our trip to Texas this Thanksgiving but alas I am unprepared. I forgot the cord to plug my camera to the computer and so am unable to download all the great pictures we took. We will be back in Kansas Sunday evening so I will start posting pictures on Monday, or may possibly wait until Wordless Wednesday. In the meantime, feel free to use discount code holidaypet on PetAutoSafety.com for a discount. That is holidaypet, all lowercase, all one word.
We are having a great time here in Texas visiting family and hope you are having a wonderful holiday weekend too!
These aren’t very good photos but it was the best I could do on Tuesday evening. We are leaving at about 5:30am tomorrow so tomorow would not be a good time to post pictures. These two photos are of our rental car. My dogs Maya and Pierson will be riding in the cargo area since there will be four people-passengers in the seats. Since we are renting a vehicle, I have lined the cargo area with a sheet and a car seat cover. I have also put Maya & Pierson’s bed in the back. And I have attached the tethers of their seat belts to the cargo area. Their dog seat belts are lying on the dog bed so that all I have to do in the morning is get them in the back and put the dog car harnesses on.
I will try to post more pictures of our trip along the way. If I don’t add more by Thanksgiving day, check us out on Saturday! Happy Wordless Wednesday!
Every year for Thanksgiving we either leave from Kansas to either visit my dad in Texas or to visit my mom in Missouri. This year it is Texas. What does this mean for my dogs Maya & Pierson? They are going with us so this means an 11-12 hour drive.
This year’s trip is a little different. We have a couple of friends going with us. Since we all only have a car, there is no way four people and two big dogs will fit in a car, so we have to rent an SUV.
Using Dog Seatbelts in SUV Cargo Area
Pierson has never taken such a long trip in the car before (as far as I know) and neither Maya nor Pierson have ridden in the back of an SUV before. Thankfully, their dog seatbelts will still work in the SUV cargo area. While Maya wears the Kurgo dog car harness and Pierson wears the Bergan one, both are using the Bergan tethers. These tethers use a carabiner clip to attach to the car so this means it can be used on the seat belt system in the back seat of a car or on a cargo ring in the back of an SUV.
Limiting Pet Hair in the Vehicle
When we pick up the car on Tuesday evening before Thanksgiving, I will make sure the carabiner clips on their dog seatbelts will fit on the cargo rings. And if not, I will find an alternative. Then I will line the back of the SUV with a sheet and blankets. The sheet is to protect the rented SUV from dog hair so that I can try to avoid an expensive cleaning fee. The blankets, of course, are for their comfort.
Packing for the Pets
Also in preparation for the trip, I will make sure I have everything we need, including the things especially for Maya & Pierson. Leashes, harnesses, water, dog toys, dog bowls, and dog food are just the basics. I also want to make sure their dog tags are secure on their collars, I want to make sure I have their veterinary information with me, and I will need dog waste bags so that I can pick up their poo at rest stops and at my dad’s house. I will also have a pet first aid booklet from Blue Pearl and a couple of new products that we are trying out for the trip.
Travel Calm Mist Spray
The first product is called Travel Calm and it is from a company called Earth Heart. Maya is super excited during the first 20 minutes of the trip and gets excited all over again every time we make a pit stop. I am hoping Travel Calm will help. The Travel Calm doesn’t just help with nerves, but it is also supposed to help with car sickness. Since I’ve known Pierson to get car sick before on short trips, I am hoping the Travel Calm will help keep him from getting car sick on the long trip.
Petz On Board Sign
The other product I have not received yet but hope to soon. It is a Petz On Board sign from a company called Extremely Board. It has a picture of Maya & Pierson on it along with our phone numbers, phone numbers of emergency contacts, and a phone number to their vet. This sign then sticks to the window of the car.
I can’t wait to try these products out and will be sure to give share my review of them when we get back. I will share some pictures of our trip too so stay tuned. And if you are traveling with pets too, be sure to travel safe! And let us know how you and your pets spent the holiday.
We like to try to use our own photos instead of the manufacturer photos for our pet auto safety products. However, the photos for these pet travel products don’t always work out for various reasons. Here is a wonderful collection for the Wordless Wednesday blog hop:

Designed to fit on a small couch, this plush cover can also be used in the back of your SUV. It can also be used in the back seat of your car, however, it does not have straps to secure it to the seat. If used in the back seat of the car, it would work more like a blanket.

Good luck on this Pet Auto Safety giveaway!
When we started this pet travel photo contest, our intent was to select one photo winner. But there were so many great photos of pets on vacation that we couldn’t pick just one. So we picked three! All three of our winners received $25.
The first winner is Trina and her dog Maggie. While this photo was taken across the ocean in Tuscany. Maggie is currently in New York with a trip planned across the seas again in the spring. Here is what Maggie had to say about her photo:
“This was my favorite vacation. We drove from Geneva Switzerland to our vacation villa in Tuscany. It was absolutely dog bliss! I already know what you’re thinking, and yes I did have my harness seatbelt on for the road trip. The owner had two dogs, and was really happy to see me. She let me roam the grounds, swim in the pool, sniff out her house and even sneaked me a treat or two.
Here I am in from of the villa after a day walking through the lavender fields.
We are lucky dogs, that we get to travel.
Wag The Dog UK
The second winner is Dirk and his three dogs. Mickey and Marley are in the winning photo on a boat. Dirk’s other dog is a Staffordshire Terrier named Mandy. We are sharing her picture too. We love the Petz On Board sign that Dirk has in his vehicle and bought one for ourselves.
Dirk has a holiday house along the river where his dogs love to swim and be on the boat with their ears flapping in the wind. Dirk says, “This was taken about a year ago. My two female dogs (the snowfox (marley), and the staffy (mandy) was adopted from our local animal welfare and at first they were very scared of the water and the boat, but slowly but surely they built confidence and today they own the boat and the water. The daschund has been babied by my girlfriend since he was a pup and thinks he is a german shepard and the pack leader! The staffy (mandy) likes to sit on the back seat putting out the vibe watching the birds flying over her head.”
The third winner is Cynthia and her dog Jack. Jack is a yellow Labrador and white Shepherd cross. He’s as light colored as our Maya. Here is what Cynthia has to say about her photo of Jack:
“This photo is of my dog, Jack, in my significant other’s parents’ backyard in GORGEOUS Miami, FL. We went on vacation there in January of this year. It was a long drive but Jack was a good boy both on the way there and on the way back. He loves to go bye-bye and this was his biggest bye-bye ever! In Miami, he especially enjoyed chasing little lizards and baby iguanas. Up here in Northern Indiana, the only thing he can chase is squirrels, so this was a treat! He also went swimming in the Ocean for the first time. My SO’s parents treated him like he was their own, and he sucked up all of the attention. They even let him lay on their “guest” couch, which even the resident dog isn’t allowed on! Jack also got to taste authentic Cuban food with me, but only a little bit. All in all, it was the. best. vacation. ever!”
Thanks, Cynthia! Get back in touch with us for your prize. I’m sure Jack would love for you to buy him some biscuits and toys.
Thank you to all who entered! On Wednesday, November 7th, we will begin another contest. The prize for the next contest is for the seat/couch cover below. This item has been discontinued by the manufacturer so this is the only one left. The winner for the very last one ever will be chosen at random on November 30th. Come visit us again on Wednesday for the contest details.
